Tóm tắt:
Once upon a time, there was a poor farmer and his wife who worked as servants for a wealthy landlord. They were kind and hardworking, but even though they were both over fifty years old, they had no children.
One day, the wife went into the forest to gather firewood. Under the scorching sun, she became very thirsty. She saw a coconut shell filled with rainwater beneath a large tree and drank from it. Not long after, she found herself pregnant.
A few months later, her husband passed away, and she gave birth to a child without arms or legs, round like a coconut. Saddened, she wanted to abandon him, but the baby spoke up:
"Mother! I am a person. Please don’t abandon me."
Moved with pity, she decided to keep him and named him Sọ Dừa
As Sọ Dừa grew, he remained the same—rolling around and unable to do any work. This upset his mother greatly. Realizing this, Sọ Dừa asked to work as a cowherd for the landlord.
When the landlord heard about Sọ Dừa, he hesitated. But thinking that Sọ Dừa would be cheap to feed and pay, he agreed. To his surprise, Sọ Dừa was an excellent cowherd. Every day, he rolled along behind the cattle to the field and back, and the cows were always well-fed and plump. The landlord was very pleased.
During the harvest season, when all the servants were busy in the fields, the landlord ordered his three daughters to take turns bringing meals to Sọ Dừa. The two older sisters, prideful and cruel, often mistreated him, while the youngest, kindhearted by nature, treated him kindly.
One day, it was the youngest daughter’s turn to bring Sọ Dừa his meal. As she approached the foot of a hill, she heard a beautiful flute melody. Quietly climbing up, she saw a handsome young man sitting in a hammock, playing the flute while the cattle grazed. But as soon as she stepped closer, the vision disappeared, and Sọ Dừa was rolling around as usual. After witnessing this several times, she realized Sọ Dừa was no ordinary person and grew fond of him.
At the end of the harvest, Sọ Dừa returned home and urged his mother to propose marriage to the landlord's daughter. Shocked, she hesitated, but after much pleading, she agreed.
When Sọ Dừa’s mother brought betel nuts for the proposal, the landlord sneered:
“If you want my daughter, bring a jar of gold coins, ten rolls of silk, ten fat pigs, and ten jars of wine.”
Discouraged, Sọ Dừa’s mother thought the marriage impossible. But on the appointed day, their house was suddenly filled with all the requested gifts, along with servants to deliver them to the landlord’s house. The landlord, taken aback, called his daughters to ask for their opinions. The two older sisters scoffed and refused, but the youngest shyly nodded her consent.
On the wedding day, the celebration was grand, with servants bustling about. When the bride was escorted, no one saw the round and awkward Sọ Dừa; instead, they saw a handsome young man standing beside the youngest daughter. Everyone was amazed and delighted, except the two older sisters, who were filled with envy.
From then on, Sọ Dừa and his wife lived happily. Not only was Sọ Dừa kind, but he was also very intelligent. He studied diligently and passed the royal examination to become a mandarin. However, soon after, the king sent him on a mission abroad. Before leaving, he gave his wife a flint, a knife, and two chicken eggs, saying they would protect her.
Jealous of their sister, the two older sisters plotted to harm her. While Sọ Dừa was away, they invited her to go rowing on the sea and pushed her into the water. She was swallowed by a whale but managed to escape by using the knife. She drifted to an island, where she used the flint to make fire and cooked the whale’s meat for food. After a few days, the chicken eggs hatched into a pair of beautiful chickens that kept her company.
One day, a ship passed by the island. The rooster crowed loudly:
“Cock-a-doodle-doo!
This is the mandarin’s wife, come to take her back!”
The mandarin ordered the ship to stop, and to his surprise, he found his wife. Overjoyed, they returned home and held a grand feast. During the celebration, the two older sisters eagerly expressed sympathy for their "lost" sister. After the feast, the mandarin called for his wife, and when the sisters saw her, they were so ashamed that they fled and disappeared forever.
